Frequently asked questions

If you're applying for a new Australian passport you need your passport photos taken before you lodge your application. This is so a guarantor/referee can sign the back of one of your photos.

If you're renewing your adult passport, or using the online passport application form, we can take your photos when you lodge your application, as they don’t need to be signed.

For your privacy and security, we don’t keep digital or physical copies of your ID photos, so we can’t reprint them.

If your photos taken at the Post Office don’t meet passport or visa application guidelines, we’ll take another set of ID photos for you for free.

If you haven't received your digital copy of your ID photos, you should:

  • check that the email address printed on the physical photos you received is correct
  • check your email 'junk' or 'spam' folder.

If you still haven't received your digital photos, take your receipt and printed photos back to the same Post Office within 14 days of purchase, and we'll take your photos again and email them to you at no cost.

When we take passport and ID photos for you, we'll make sure they comply with passport standards.

If you submit your photo to the relevant passport authority within the necessary timeframe but your photos aren't accepted, take your receipt and photos back to the same Post Office and we'll replace them at no cost.

Note, most authorities require a photo that is less than 6 months old.

For Australian passports or any other passports requiring 35x45 mm photos, you’ll receive a set of 6 colour photographs. For passports requiring larger photo dimensions, you’ll receive a set of 2-3 colour photographs.

You can also receive a free digital copy of your photo via email.

Identity photos should be re-taken within a reasonable timeframe. Your request to refund, replace or repair your passport photos or identity photos, must be accompanied by proof of purchase. If you can’t provide your Australia Post receipt, another form of proof of purchase will be required, such as a credit card statement, which clearly shows the purchase was from Australia Post.
