Extra Cover is Australia Post’s optional parcel protection service that covers your item for loss or damage while in transit, over and above the included compensation for certain Australia Post products.
It provides loss or damage cover up to the specified value of your item (from $100 up to $5,000) while it’s being carried by Australia Post.
Extra Cover is free for the first $100 of cover, then costs $2.50 for each additional $100, up to $5,000.
Example: You’re sending a parcel with goods valued at $300.
| Value range of goods | Extra cover cost |
|---|---|
| $0-$100 | $0 |
| $101-$200 | $2.50 |
| $201-$300 | $5 |
Total Extra Cover cost for $300 of goods = $5
Note: You must add $2.95 for Signature on Delivery if your item is valued above $500 (this does not apply to Registered Post, because it’s already included).
If you don’t purchase Extra Cover and your item is lost or damaged while in our network, you may still be eligible for compensation of up to $100. We offer this for most items you send with us, with eligibility of claims assessed on a case-by-case basis. A refund of postage may also be payable. Extra Cover and any compensation offered under the Australia Post Terms and Conditions are in addition to any rights and remedies you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.
Costs are calculated based on the item’s declared value.
- Ask to purchase Extra Cover when lodging a parcel at your local Post Office
- You can add Extra Cover after you’ve bought your satchel or postage label. Request this service at your Post Office before you send your item
