Extra Cover1

Extra Cover is Australia Post’s optional parcel protection service that covers your item for loss or damage while in transit, over and above the included compensation for certain Australia Post products.

It provides loss or damage cover up to the specified value of your item (from $100 up to $5,000) while it’s being carried by Australia Post.

Extra Cover is free for the first $100 of cover, then costs $4 for each additional $100, up to $5,000.

Example: You’re sending a parcel with goods valued at $300.

Value range of goodsExtra cover cost
$0-$100$0
$101-$200$4
$201-$300$8

Total Extra Cover cost for $300 of goods = $8

If you don’t purchase Extra Cover and your item is lost or damaged while in our network, you may still be eligible for compensation of up to $100. We offer this for most items you send with us, with eligibility of claims assessed on a case-by-case basis. A refund of postage may also be payable. Extra Cover and any compensation offered under the Australia Post Terms and Conditions are in addition to any rights and remedies you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.

  • You can add Extra Cover after you’ve bought your satchel or postage label. Request this service at your Post Office before you send your item
  • If you’re printing your shipping labels online using your MyPost Business account (International Express and International Standard only), you can add Extra Cover during the order process

Extra Cover is only available for eligible items. Learn more about what’s not eligible.

Extra Cover isn't available for:

  • International Post Registered, which comes with $100 maximum compensation for loss or damage included
  • every destination – check your destination with our online postage calculator
  • items prohibited for carriage by your destination country – check our International Post Guide for postal restrictions by country

Please note that if you’re a business or online retailer with an Australia Post parcel sending contract in place, your items are not eligible for Extra Cover – instead you can choose Transit Cover for loss or damage cover.

These exclusions do not limit any rights or remedies you may have under the Australian Consumer Law.

If your item is lost or damaged, you may be eligible for compensation through Included Cover, Extra Cover, or Transit Cover. To make a claim:

  1. Gather all supporting documentation (proof of value, lodgement receipt, photos of damage, etc.).
  2. Submit your claim at your local Post Office or raise an enquiry online.
  3. Follow the process and timeframes outlined by Australia Post.

For more information, visit the Australia Post Compensation page.

All Extra Cover services are subject to the general Australia Post Terms and Conditions (PDF 1.64MB). Coverage limits, exclusions, and specific requirements may apply depending on your parcel, service, and destination. Please review the latest terms before sending valuable items.

Please note that in all cases proof of lodgement will be required to support any claims for compensation.

Extra Cover isn’t available for Parcel Contract customers, but Transit Cover offers protection for your shipments. Speak with your Account Manager today to explore how Transit Cover can help safeguard your deliveries.
