Travel insurance is useful for travellers domestically and abroad as it may offer financial protection against certain unforeseen disruptions that may affect your trip. These include trip cancellation, overseas medical expenses, lost luggage and emergency assistance. Notably, overseas medical and dental expenses make up nearly one-third of international claims.3
Contrary to the belief of 43% of Australian travellers, neither the Australian Government nor Medicare will cover overseas medical expenses, despite the government handling over 20,000 cases each year, including those requiring hospitalisation or evacuation. This is a compelling reason for travel insurance. With Australia Post's travel insurance policies, you may be covered for a wide range of possibilities plus you'll have access to a 24-hour emergency assistance team.
Determining which travel insurance policy cover suits your needs, depends on various factors, including your budget, preferences, the value of your belongings, the duration of your trip, the destinations you'll be visiting and any activities you plan to participate in during your travels.
Australia Post offers a range of travel insurance options designed to cater to different travel styles and budgets: International Comprehensive, Basic International and Domestic, all offering Annual Multi-Trip travel insurance options. Compare these plans to see which is suitable for your trip.
Additionally, if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you can complete an online medical assessment when you obtain your online travel insurance quote. While we automatically include cover for a number of existing medical conditions (subject to the criteria outlined in the PDS), others may require a medical assessment and, if approved, payment of an extra premium may be required.
To help you select which Australia Post travel insurance plan may be appropriate for your needs, we recommend you carefully review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Australia Post offers a range of travel insurance options to cover you during your journey. The general benefits and cover options vary depending on the selected policy. Interestingly, the Australian Government has noted that more than 90% of travellers will seek out insurance covering them for cancellation and overseas medical expenses caused by COVID-19. Australia Post travel insurance plans include specific COVID-19 benefits.4

We want you to be able to have convenient access to travel insurance. Our International Comprehensive and Domestic single trip plans are available in Australia Post outlets. No variations to the plans are available in-store. If you bought a policy in-store, you can then call us to add cover variations or amend the policy afterwards.
Alternatively, if you need any cover variations prior to purchase, such as Cruise Cover or Motorcycle/Moped Riding coverage, please ask in-store for a base quote (which we will email to you or give you the quote number so you can call us). You can then visit auspost.com.au/travelinsurance or call 1300 728 015 to buy a policy.
Australia Post offers cover for certain pre-existing medical conditions, with some automatically included on your policy (subject to the criteria outlined in the PDS).
If your conditions are not ALL included in the list of conditions that are automatically included, you will need complete a medical assessment. If your existing medical conditions are approved, you must pay the required additional premium. You can complete an online medical assessment when you obtain your online travel insurance quote, or do this over the phone. You cannot complete a medical assessment in an Australia Post outlet.
In summary, an existing medical condition is any disease, illness, medical or dental issue, or physical defect that you are aware of, or could reasonably be expected to be aware of, at the time you take out your policy (or book your trip on an annual multi-trip policy option). This includes conditions that have required hospital visits, surgery, or emergency care in the past 12 months; those needing prescription medication, regular check-ups, or specialist consultations; conditions affecting major organs or systems (like the heart, brain, or lungs), or any chronic, ongoing, or undiagnosed issues under investigation
Need more information about existing medical conditions? Please read the Combined FSG/PDS for details on how we define existing medical conditions, as well as any exclusions or conditions that may apply. If you’d like further guidance, our team is here to help—just call us on 1300 728 015.
If you get sick or injured while travelling overseas, Australia Post travel insurance offers potential cover for various medical expenses. Approximately one-third of international insurance claims for costs incurred overseas are associated with medical or dental issues.3
